Geodetective: instructions 2

Zoom with the mouse wheel inside the image or use the buttons. Drag the enlarged image with the hand cursor; swipe to move on a touchscreen.
Trace and colour the outlines on these pages too, but also mark an expedition route. 4 Landing site. Choose a flat, safe area that remains flat over a larger region in case the probe lands off target. Mark the landing site with an ellipse and an X at its centre.
5 Route. Draw an exploration route from the landing site that visits every differently coloured unit and avoids dangerously steep slopes. This is a rover journey, so it need not return to the landing site. Leave riskier terrain until the end. 6 Stops. Use small circles to mark sampling stops in different units, at their boundaries or at unusual features. 7 Timing. State the estimated arrival time, ETA, at the final stop. At a research rover’s speed, ten kilometres take about five years; astronauts would travel much faster.
