In spring, as you fly over the polar region, the sand fields surrounding the ice cap are still bright with winter frost. Yet small dark spots are growing in more and more places. The bright frost sublimates, turning into gas, and exposes dark basaltic sand beneath it. Next winter, the west wind rises again, bringing dust and cold as it circles the cap and rearranges its sandy hairstyle.
