During the winter darkness and beneath clouds, you can observe polar snowfall only with radar. The carbon-dioxide ice fields that were dusty in summer are covered with snow again by spring and shine so brightly that the ice cap can be seen even from Earth. The south pole is the brightest surface on Mars. In the spring sublimation season, new fractures, dust and gas geysers, and expanding holes in the ice add variety to the white landscape.
