A perfectly flat plain, but close inspection reveals a volcanic region covered with painfully sharp lava fragments as far as the eye can see and beyond. Lava accumulated over billions of years in the depression between the realms of the two volcanic rises. From the west, even in the recent geological past, new lava flows brought the still-hot, fluid magma of the Martian interior onto the plains of the Amazons.
