Rivers shaped the surface of this topographic boundary region over an area the size of Hungary. Lava flows and floods filled the “Great Plain”, while the “North Hungarian Mountains” rose along faults. The 1.5-kilometre peak of Cobres crater stands in cratered “Transdanubia”, surrounded by a flat basin into which “Lake Balaton” flowed. Labou Vallis shaped the streamlined islands of “Szigetköz”.
