The Eridania basin held a sea, or at least a network of lakes. Volcanic heat warmed its water from below. You see only its traces: clays and other minerals deposited beneath water a kilometre deep. The Eridania sea rippled 3.8 billion years ago beneath the skies of a red planet that may not yet have been red, around the time life may have arisen in similar places on Earth.
