There are no valley networks within the boundaries of this ancient, lava-covered volcanic region. They probably lie beneath thick layers of lava, debris and ash. To the north, in the older cratered terrain, rivers formed deltas at the ends of winding valleys where they reached the northern lowlands, which may once have been an ocean. Valleys ending in the highlands have no deltas.
