Geologic description and interpretation: While a small subset of
classical Lowellian canals corresponds to topographic or albedo features on
Mars, the bulk of canals do not. Agathodaemon, Cerberus and Thoth-Nepenthes
(canals) are dark markings of considerable extant which have been repeteadly
photographed adn about whose reality there can be no question. "These may
represent locales where, for meteorological reasons, fine bright dust is
unlikely to be deposited, or where, for reason of geochemistry or surface
roughness, theer is a preferential abondance of lower albedo material.  Cerberus has changed dramatically since the time of the Viking
missions. In 1995 Cerberus has virtually disappeared at visible wavelengths.
This indicates that the normally low-albedo surface has been covered with
bright dust sometime between the end of the Viking missions (1982) and present.
Earth-based observations suggest that Cerberus has been fading since the
late-1980's. Cerberus III. A recent surface change is the appearance of a very
conspicuous dark band across Hesperia. This has been named for the faint
