Western Arcadia’s dome-studded hills look like a world beyond Mars, a possible film set for science fiction on a distant planet. Beside the hat-shaped hills lies wrinkled, sheet-like terrain and a perfectly flat surface interrupted by a steep escarpment. Are these igneous or mud volcanoes, traces of vanished ice, underwater formations or evidence of a tsunami? Which route would you take to investigate the landscape’s history? Put the landing site, marked X, on flat terrain and leave the most dangerous ground until the end: your rover will stay there.
