DARK SPOTS lie in a large crater below a 4.5-metre heat shield that has just separated from a descending rover. The rover’s camera took this image as it approached the surface through the atmosphere. Later, the rover drove to the dark material, photographed it and scooped a sample into its analytical instrument. What is the name of the crater it is approaching? The rover route maps will help.
What are these spots, and why are they visible even through the dusty atmosphere? Overview map B will help.
Light and dark materials in swirling patches: what are these materials, and where is this place? The spiral form results from the wind’s work. The image was taken in summer. See map sheet 24.
