You are in perhaps the most varied region of Mars. Deep troughs opened in its surface, volcanoes rose and glaciers covered it. Yet it is actually a fragment of the ancient, cratered southern terrain caught in the furnace of Tharsis volcanism. Farther north, ancient valley networks are hard to find. The region is cold, and even clouds become caught on its elevations.
