Morning brings dense fog to the broad troughs along which the crust of Mars pulled apart. Steep, gullied walls, sometimes ten kilometres high compared with two kilometres in Earth’s Grand Canyon, continue to widen through landslides. Water and ice have also filled these depressions. Their walls contain the longest continuous sequences of rock layers on Mars, which a remotely controlled drone may one day map layer by layer.
