Chaotically broken blocks lie everywhere in this region, where great floods began at the eastern end of Valles Marineris. Surface glaciers and ground ice melted suddenly, bursting upwards and out of their former position. The flood even broke through the wall of a giant crater as it travelled towards the northern plains, swirling and carrying away the material of the former surface.
