The brilliant flash and mountain-sized fragments hurled out by this asteroid impact almost wiped out every early form of life on Mars. Or did they wipe out all of it? Or was there no life to destroy? Four billion years ago, this region was transformed within a few hours. An oval basin surrounded by a thick layer of hot debris marked the beginning of the new Noachian era. Perhaps some of the ejected material reached Earth.
