Countless large and small asteroids struck the ancient crust of Mars. Where that crust survives, little has changed: no valleys formed here, and volcanic lava did not flood it. In places, you can see traces of even older impacts buried deeper below. This is the most Moon-like region of Mars, because it reflects the same era as the lunar surface. Its craters, however, are much more eroded.
