Pixel maker

Zoom with the mouse wheel inside the image or use the buttons. Drag the enlarged image with the hand cursor; swipe to move on a touchscreen.
In this relaxing exercise, numerical data become a map and a pattern emerges. You will see Mars as through a telescope with a surface resolution of about 157 kilometres per pixel. Pixels are coded from 1 to 5 according to their reflected light and colour. Colour each numbered pixel with its specified colour: one hemisphere’s albedo markings will appear, with the longest-known feature at the centre.
