Curiosity’s mission is to collect evidence of how ancient, warm, wet Mars, with drinkable water, became a cold, dry planet with acidic water. Its target is Gale crater, 3.5–3.8 billion years old. Curiosity landed on the crater floor, investigates traces of ancient dry rivers and lakes, crosses dark basaltic sand dunes and slowly climbs the five-kilometre-high Mount Sharp (Aeolis Mons). The mountain’s layers preserve deposits spanning billions of years of Martian history.
