The 360-degree system was devised on Earth because the Sun moves roughly one degree a day across the sky, completing a circle in 360—or more precisely 365—days. A Martian year lasts 668 sols. Martians might therefore have divided their circle into 660 degrees, with the Sun moving about one six-hundred-and-sixtieth of the circle per sol.
