You are travelling along the boundary between the low north and the high south. The transition could be a slope, but it is not: instead, a labyrinth of mesas characterises the landscape. The place recalls the American Wild West, but this is northern Arabia. Glaciers shaped the skirts of the mesas, covering their debris with smooth material ending in lobes. River valleys are also wider than elsewhere and contain grooved, glacier-like deposits.
