Colours indicate different elevations. Each elevation zone has its own history. In the cratered southern highlands lie the traces of two especially large impacts: Argyre and Hellas. The northern regions subsided and are covered by sediments. Above these terrains stand two volcanic rises made of heavy lava deposits: Tharsis and Elysium.
