Valles Marineris

Ius Chasma

VM

Origin of name:

The name Valles Marineris was suggested by W. H. Pickering, eommemorates the Mariner space probes which revealed the Martian topography. (de Vaucouleurs 1975)

A név eredete:  A Mariner-völgyet először lefényképező Mariner-9 szondáról nevezték el, W. H. Pickering csillagász javaslatára. Megj.: A Mariner kráter a Mariner-4-től kapta nevét.

Geologic description and interpretation:
In the Valles Marineris region, Mars, to the west the canyons are deep, have straight walls that are clearly fault scarps. To the east, they become shallower and more irregular in outline and generally lack the straight wall segments. Several mechanisms formed these canyons to its present form. The presence of layered deposits in the canyons  in Candor Chasma suggests that lakes were formerly present in the canyons and had catastrophically drained to the east. In Juventae Chasma, water seemingly pooled in the canyon and overflowed to the north to form a large outlflow channel, Maja Vallis. The outlet is 4000 m higher than the bottom of the canyon, indicating that Juventae Chasma once contained a deep lake. The tributaries to Ius Chasma probably formed primarily by sapping processes acting preferentially along fault. Tithonium and Ius Chasmata, appear to have formed by the merging of lines of pits, as though the surface had collapsed into fault-created voids at depth. Hebes Chasma is a completely enclosed canyon and has no obvious outlet for any water it might have contained, nor for any of the materials that had to be removed to form the canyon. It contains thick stacks of sediments. [1]
