Geologic description and interpretation:

The polar domes (Planum Boreum, Planum Australe) includes the polar layered deposits (south polar layered deposits (SPLD) or north polar layered deposits (NPLD), residual polar ice cap (in South: Perennial water-ice cap covered by carbon dioxide (CO2)[1] , in North: water-ice cap with small amounts of dust[2]), and other geologic units. [3]

Polar troughs are arranged along spiral trends that extend from the center to the periphery of Planum Boreum. Erosion was mainly due to ice sublimation, wind scouring, and local avalanching, as erosional hollows, landslides, frost streaks, aeolian veneers, yardangs, and dunes are prevalent on many of the surfaces on and adjacent to the margins of Planum Boreum and within Chasma Boreale. [1]

A sarki fennsíkok (az angolban használt dóm kifejezés jobban utal alakjára) magukban foglalják a (1) sarki rétegzett üledékeket (SPLD, NPLD), és az (2) állandó (maradvány) jégsapkát (D-en:szárazjég fedte vízjég; É-on vízjég némi porral; illetve mindkét helyen por és jég évszakos rétegei) és más egységeket.
A sarki árkok spirálisan kanyarognak a sarokból kiindulva. Kialakításukban jég szublimáció és felhalmozódás ("akkubuláció"), a szél maró hatása, csuszamlások stb. is szerepet játszottak.
