Isidis Planitia

Isidis Planitia

Origin of name:
Isis' Region; Isis was Egyptian goddess of heaven and fertility.
A név eredete:

Geologic description and interpretation:
At Isidis Planitia (Isidis Dorsum) wrinkle ridges may have formed by compressional stress developed from loading by unit.[1]
Fractures, faults, and grabens (valleys between faults) in Nili Fossae are related to the formation of the Isidis impact basin.2]

Libya Montes highlands are one of the oldest regions on Mars and have been heavily modified by fluvial processes.[3] Libya and Xanthe Montes units may have formed from uplifted ancient crustal materials where they are in proximity to large, ancient impact basins, including the Isidis and putative Chryse Planitia structures.[4]

Isidis Planitia is covered with many tens of partially-buried impact craters, implying that the cover material in the basin is thin.[5] Subsequently its floor may have become flooded by volcanic lava before being further buried by sediment derived from the surrounding highlands.[6] Isidis Planitia unit forms a sedimentary deposit, rapidly emplaced. May result from discharge of ground water or from overspill

of northern plains ocean across a divide from Utopia basin. Pitted cones may form by sedimentary volcanism due to compaction of volatile-rich sediments, and sinuous ridges within troughs may be related to deformation of volatile-rich material; other alternatives possible. Wrinkle ridges may have formed by compressional stress developed from loading by unit. [7
